What are animal tear stains?

The cause of the brown tear stains can be related to many different issues and even health issues. Such as blocked tear ducts, this is the canal that runs from the eye to the nose.

It can be because of a food allergy or any allergy. Improper diet is definitely a big cause. Many dogs change to grain free food and the tear stain problem is solved.

The dog can be teething or even have an ear infection which can cause tear stains.

The tear stains can be cause by genetic issues: from ingrowing eyelashes, to inverted eyelids, but also shallow eye sockets or breeds that have a very short nose.

The production of tears can result from eye irritation or even the eyes being unable to drain the tears because the drain holes near the eye are to small. For all these reasons we always recommend you consult your veterinarian to see if there are no underlying health issues that need to be treated. The reddish stain is actually caused by the pigment Epiphora that builds up under the eye and can damage the hair because it’s so acidic. In most cases it’s all about keeping the eyes as dry as possible and cleaning the eyes every day.
