The Pomeranian – small in size, big in attitude.
A walking puffball with royal flair, effortlessly winning over rooms (and hearts). Let’s be honest: with that adorable face and ever-ready “I’m the boss” look, it’s no surprise so many fall head over heels for this breed.
Whether you're a proud Pom owner or a grooming pro surrounded by fur and flair all day, working with a Pomeranian is always a treat (okay, sometimes a tangle-fest).
In this first part of our blog, we’ll dive into the art of at-home grooming. What are the must-dos? What should you avoid (spoiler: skipping brushing is never an option)? And how do you survive shedding season without your own fluff-induced breakdown?
We’ll take you on a coat care adventure – packed with tips, do’s & don’ts, and a healthy dose of humor. Let’s be honest: sometimes it feels like your Pom needs more grooming than you. And guess what? It’s true.
Brushes at the ready – let’s go!

The Shedding Season: Welcome to the World of Fluff and Vacuums
Let’s start with the least glamorous bit: shedding.
Pomeranians go through what's called “coat blow” – shedding their thick winter coat in spring and switching back in fall. During this time, it might feel like your dog is multiplying in tufts all over your home.
Back in the day, dogs lived more outdoors and shed in sync with the seasons. But nowadays, our cozy indoor Poms shed more continuously – no more peak seasons, just year-round fluff. Not ideal for your black sweater or beige carpet.
That’s why brushing during shedding is essential.
Want to make life easier? A trip to a professional groomer is a luxury you won’t regret. One session can remove up to 80% of the loose undercoat – less hair on your couch, less stress for you.
Brushing at Home? Here’s What You’ll Need
Going the DIY route? Grab the Yento Mega Pin Slicker Medium
With its long pins and perfect angle, this slicker brush penetrates the Pom's dense coat and lifts out loose hairs efficiently.
Pro tip: Always brush layer by layer – from skin to tip. Most tangles form near the skin. Always follow up with a wide-tooth comb like the Show Tech Greyhond Antistatic Comb 19 cm. It glides smoothly and reveals what you may have missed.
Extra Help for Extra Fluffy Poms
Got a Pom with a particularly thick coat – like a neutered male or one with dense genetics? Brushing may feel like shearing a sheep. That’s when you bring out the big guns: the Show Tech Antistatic Rake Comb Deshedder. Nicknamed the “shepherd’s rake,” this tool is a lifesaver for thick undercoats. Its rounded, antistatic teeth glide gently while working wonders on flanks, bum, and chest. Use with slow, soft movements to avoid damaging the coat.
A Little Magic in a Bottle: SHOWTECH+ Quick Fix Spray
Let’s be real: brushing can be a chore. But the SHOWTECH+ Quick Fix Spray makes it so much easier. This bestseller helps detangle, smooth, and protect the coat – reducing knots and preventing future ones. It's not magic (yes, you still need to brush), but it makes the job a lot more pleasant – for you and your Pom.
The spray works like a brushing spray: it detangles more easily, smooths the hair, and – bonus points – protects the coat, helping to prevent future tangles. It’s like applying a protective layer that makes the coat more resilient and manageable.
No, it’s not a magic spray (you still have to brush – sorry, not sorry), but it makes the whole ritual so much nicer – for both you and your Pom. Less pulling, fewer frustrated sighs, and most importantly: more quality time
Washing & Drying: Wellness Meets Precision
Bathing a Pom at home? Totally doable – but don’t underestimate the drying. Washing isn’t the issue – drying is. A Pom’s coat is like a fluffy chrysanthemum: full, layered, and stubborn.
Let them air-dry in the sun or with a towel? Big no-no. Moisture in the undercoat = mats, or worse: felted patches that can itch and irritate.
Use a powerful dryer, like the Groom-X Zeppelin, which dries from the inside out. Picture blowing open a chrysanthemum – each hair needs individual drying. Yes, it takes time, but your Pom (and your sofa) will thank you.

Two Final Must-Know Messages
1. Every Pom Deserves a Pro Grooming Session
The Pom’s grooming needs haven’t changed over the years – only the styles have. A trim every 6–8 weeks isn’t a luxury; it’s essential for their health and looks.
Whether you prefer a natural look, a round floof, or a styled showstopper – your groomer will guide you with honest advice and skilled hands. A Pom loves looking sharp as much as we do.
2. Never Shave a Pomeranian – Ever
This can’t be stressed enough:
Never shave a Pom – not by you, not by a groomer.
Their double coat consists of a soft insulating undercoat and a protective top coat. Shaving destroys that balance and leads to:
Permanent coat damage or loss (post-clipping alopecia)
Frizzy, dull regrowth or patchy areas
Loss of protection from sun and cold
Even with severe mats or tangles – there are better solutions: professional de-shedding, thinning, or alternative techniques. Always ask for expert advice before reaching for clippers.
Trim, shape, brush, de-shed – but never shave.
Your Pom (and their fabulous coat) will thank you.
